Several artists have made unrealistic sculptures of baby platypuses that went viral on social media because people thought they were real. The word “puggle” is technically trademarked by a stuffed toy manufacturer. The problem is that there is already a very different animal with this name-the dog breed that is a cross between a beagle and a pug. However, it’s unclear if “puggle” will become the officially accepted name for baby platypuses. Maybe they thought that because these animals are the only mammals that lay eggs, their young should stick together with the same name. Over time, people began using this word to refer to baby platypuses as well as baby echidnas, even though the term originated as a name for the young of the spiny anteater. The name became widespread for baby echidnas when a scientist stumbled upon this fictional creature and saw that it looked uncannily like a baby echidna. The official Macquarie Dictionary says that the word “puggle” initially referred to a popular fictional animal that was a staple of Australian children’s entertainment in the 1970s. Where did the name “puggles” even come from? It seems pretty random. “Pups” is a name for the young of many different species, so why not platypuses as well? The name “puggle” is also used for baby echidnas.Īnother nickname that people like to use for baby platypuses is “platypups.” This one isn’t as widespread, but it makes sense.
